In addition to the 2002, 2004 & 2006 & 2008 Jr American Legion Championship teams the Bulls also won the 15 & Under State Games Championship in 1997 and the 16 & Under State Games Title in 1998. Apex High won the State 4A Championship in 2000. That team had a strong Bull flavor as six starters were former Bulls. Joey Bradley, Jason Gaston, Tom Graham, Ben Phillips, Mitch Pollard & Landon Powell all played for the Bulls in 1997 & 1998.
Jason Gaston (97) and Mitch Pollard (97-98) became the first Bulls to be college teammates as they both played for Lenoir Community College in 2001. Tom Graham (97-98), Brad Nelson (98) and Aaron Ranft (98-99) joined Pollard in 2002 to give the Bulls four spots on the Lenoir roster. Aaron Ranft and J4 Morton (00-01) were teammates at Lenoir in 2004. Ethan Burton (00) joined Cameron Mitchell (98-99) at Brown University in 2003. Brian Peede (00) teamed up with Brian Caudill (00-01) at Appalachian St in 2004. Tom Graham and Aaron Ranft were teammates for two seasons at Radford. Cory Harrilchak (03-04) and Greg Jones (01) teamed up in 2008 at Elon. Matt Holt (02-03), Brian Booth (03-04), Seth Frankhoff (02-04), Rhett Miller (03-04), Michael Rooney (03-04) and David Shambley (04-05) were joined by Brian Rhino (06-07) to give the Bulls seven players on the UNC-Wilmington roster in 2009.
Jake Hall (97-99) and Mickey Hall (99-01) were the 1st brothers to ever play for the Bulls and played together in 1999. Mitch (97-98) and Brian Pollard (00-01), Darrus (05-06) and Percy Evans (06-07), David (04-05) and Grant Shambley (07-08), Ross (07) and Ben Snotherly (08-09), TJ (07) and Matt Ruth (08-09) Jimmy (05) and Tommy Robinson (09) are other sets of brother Bulls.
James Todd (06-08) joined Drew Woodall (05-07), Seth Frankoff (02-04), Kerry Floyd (04-06) and brothers Jake and Mickey Hall as the only players to be part of three different Bulls Teams.
Seth Frankoff earned championship rings in 2002 and 2004 and Kerry Floyd earned his two in 2004 and 2006 and James Todd earned his two in 2006 & 2008. As of now 64 Bulls have earned state championship rings.
In 2002, Jake Hall playing for Georgia Tech and Landon Powell (97-98) playing for South Carolina met at Coastal Federal Field in Myrtle Beach, SC. In 2004, Powell & the Gamecocks hosted Tom Graham and Radford. Mickey Hall (99-01) played right field and Davey Penny (97) threw for the Augusta Green Jackets (Boston) as they took on the Rome Braves (Atlanta) and their pitcher Brad Nelson (98) in a 2004 South Atlantic League game marking the first time Pro Bulls ever met on the field. In 2007, Matt Mangini and Mickey Hall played against each other in High-A California League. Mickey played for the Lancaster JetHawks and Matt played for the High Desert Mavericks.
Bull Matt Mangini was twice named as the National College Player of the Week in 2006 while playing at NCSU.
In 2002, Jake Hall and Landon Powell met twice more in the College World Series in Omaha, Nebraska. They split the games and Landon was named to the All-Tournament Team as the Gamecocks lost to Texas in the National Championship game. Tech finished fifth. Powell and the Gamecocks returned to Omaha in 2003 where they finished fifth. Landon made the All-Tournament team again in his final CWS appearance as the Cocks finished 3rd in 2004. Tim Federovich played for the UNC Tar Heels in the 2006, 2007 & 2008 CWS. UNC finished 2nd in 2006 & 2007. Brett Eibner started on the mound and in centerfield for Arkansas in the 2009 CWS.
Landon Powell was named as a Coastal Plains League All-Star in 2001 while playing for the Wilmington Sharks. Matt Mangini was named to the Northwoods League All-Star team and also was the League MVP in 2005. Mangini was named to the Cape Cod League All-Star team after leading the league in batting in 2006.
Landon Powell was named to the 1 or 2 team on every All-American Team selected for the 2004 season. Landon hit .331 with 19 HRs and 66 RBIs and played 70 games behind the plate with only 1 error. Landon was a finalist for the Dick Howser Award (top college player) and the Johnny Bench Award (top college catcher). Tim Federovich was named to the Freshman All-American team in 2006.
Landon Powell played for national teams in 1998 and again in 2002. In 1998, Landon drove in the winning run to give the USA Youth National Team its 1st ever World Championship. In 2002 he was named as the Best Defensive Player as Team USA took gold in the Haakbal World Tournament in the Netherlands and silver in the FISU World Championship in Messina, Italy. Jon Willard played for the USA Junior National Team as they claimed the silver medal in the Junior Pan Am Games in Willemstad, Curacao in 2003. Tim Federovich played for Team USA during the summer of 2006 as they traveled to Havana, Cuba where they won the Gold Medal in the FISU World Championship. Seth Frankoff joined team USA and participated in the Haakbal World Tournament in 2007.
David Penny (97) was the first Bulls player to complete his college eligibility as he finished his four-year career at East Carolina University in the spring of 2003. Landon Powell (S.Carolina) joined Davey in the 4-year letterman club in 2004. Since then Jake Hall, Tom Graham, Aaron Ranft, Ethan Burton, Kelly Strake, Jon Willard Trevor Kaylid, Greg Jones, Hayes Hinson, Andrew Wilson and Cory Harrilchak have completed their 4-year careers in college baseball.
Mickey Hall (99-01) became the first Bull ever to be drafted. The Boston Red Sox selected Mickey in the 2nd round. Brad Nelson (98) was taken by the Braves in the 10th round and David Penny (97) was taken in the 28th round by the Boston Red Sox. Landon Powell was drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 25th round and decided to return to South Carolina for his senior season. That decision proved wise as Landon was a 1st round pick of the Oakland Athletics and the 24th overall pick in 2004. In 2007, Matt Mangini was a supplemental first round pick by Seattle while Brett Eibner was taken by the Houston Astros in the 4th round. Tim Federowicz was taken in the 7th round in 2008 by the Boston Red Sox. The Atlanta Braves selected Cory Harrilchak in the 14th round and Andrew Wilson in the 39th round of the 2009 Major League Draft.
Landon Powell became the first former Bull to play in a Major League baseball game on April 11, 2009. He hit a 2-RBI 2B off Seattle's Felix Hernadez in his first trip to the plate. Mickey Hall (AAA) is in his 7th season and Matt Mangini (AA) is in his 3rd year, while while Tim Federowicz began his pro career in 2008. Cory Harrilchak and Andrew Wilson began their pro careers in 2009. Davey Penny retired in 2005 and Brad Nelson retired in 2009.
Landon Powell was named to the California League All-Star team in 2006. Powell went 1-2 and threw out a runner trying to steal in the game against the Carolina League All-Stars in Salem Va. Powell also finished second in the Home Run Derby prior to the game. Powell was the starting catcher in the 2007 Texas League All-Star game in Corpus Christi. He again finished second in the Home Run Derby prior to the game.
Joey Bradley (97-98) became the 1st Bull to marry as he took the plunge on August 7, 2004. Davey Penny, Brad Nelson, Robert Pearce, Mitch Pollard, Jason Gaston and Landon Powell have since joined Joey in the corral. Several other Bulls have been rounded-up and will get the Bull Ring in the near future.
Joey Bradley became the first Bull to become a Daddy when Cade Allen Bradley was born on July 30, 2006. Davey Penny and Brad Nelson also became a proud papas of baby girls in 2007. Robert Pearse and Landon Powell became dads in 2009.
Jere Morton IV became the first Bull to play in our program and to return as a coach. 'J4' played for the Bulls in 2000-2001 and returned as pitching coach in 2008.
Matt Cossa (2000-01) and Lee Godwin (1997-98) passed away during 2006. We cherish our time with them and will always remember them as our teammates.
