Legion players make the right call

Two grads take to the booth for state tourney

Joe and Grant announcing State Tourney.

Green Hope graduates Joe Pistacchio & Grant Shambley call the action
at the Junior American Legion state tournament in Durham.

BY J. MIKE BLAKE, Staff Writer, Cary News

The Cary Bulls wanted to pull out all the stops when they hosted the Junior Legion state tournament at the Durham Athletic Park last month. And for Bulls coach Ron Powell, that meant having live video and audio broadcasts of all 15 games in the double-elimination tournament, which was held July 16-20.

In baseball, minor league players get called up to the majors all the time. But for the Cary Legion program, the younger program reached out to the older for help in pulling off the task.

Powell went to Joe Pistacchio, a Green Hope graduate, and asked him if he'd be willing to do it. There was little hesitation from Pistacchio, a player on the Cary Senior Legion team.

"I told him I'd love to do it to give back to the program, kind of because it's done so much for me," Pistacchio said. There was even less hesitation when Powell gave Pistacchio his choice of broadcast partner. Pistacchio went with former Green Hope teammate Grant Shambley. "Grant is always in the dugout announcing games anyway, so I figured he'd be the perfect one," Pistacchio said. Shambley said he's heard the jokes from teammates that he's destined to be an announcer. So he gave it a shot. "If it wasn't someone I knew like Joe, I probably wouldn't have done it," Shambley said.

At 9:45 a.m., the two were calling the tournament's first game, trading off on who was doing the play-by-play and who was doing the color commentary. As the two Tim & Blair Betts in the boothwent along, they received plenty of feedback from those around them - like how to incorporate the weather into the broadcast to make listeners feel as though they were there. "We constantly had people making sure we sounded good and weren't too close to the mic or anything," Pistacchio said. "We both watch baseball and it was fun being able to do what those guys - like Joe Morgan and Jon Miller - do."

The broadcast, along with a stationary camera view of the field from above home plate, were streamed live on UStream.com. The number of online viewers and listeners stayed around 50 for most of the tournament.

Things weren't always perfect. Shambley and Pistacchio - as well as Blair Betts, who was able to broadcast a few games here and there - all had Senior Legion games that conflicted with the broadcast schedule. So on a few nights, the two had to leave in the afternoon and make it back to Cary in time for a playoff game. "It was definitely hectic a couple of days because we had some rain delays. So we got out of there kind of late, and we had to go straight to our field to play," Shambley said.

The two were subbed by Josh McCauley and Matt Daum - two players from the town of Cary's Babe Ruth League team. And Pistacchio and Shambley, being amateurs just getting used to broadcasting, had their share of bloopers. "We both had our voices crack and stuttered our words, said things wrong, forgot how many outs there were at times - things like that," Pistacchio said.

Sometimes the workload became too much to juggle. "We tried to keep the book on each game to know what everyone did and we always kind of got behind on that, so we didn't know what someone had done their last time up," Shambley said. In the end, all of the players involved enjoyed the experience. Shambley is headed to Wake Forest next year on baseball scholarship, while Betts will do the same at Indiana and Pistacchio at Appalachian State. With four more years of education ahead of them, the players could consider broadcast as a back-up plan to their baseball playing futures. "So that's something I would definitely look into because it was a lot of fun," Pisctacchio said.
